Radiation Safety Officer Services

Most facilities that use radioactive materials have an individual designated to oversee the safe use of radioactive materials. Certain types of radioactive materials licenses require such an individual to be named on your radioactive materials license as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), other facilities simply have a RSO for good practice. Whether required or not, it is increasingly difficult to find indivuals who are qualifed to provide RSO services. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of Utah have recently changed the requirements for individuals who can be named as RSO. It is simply not sufficient to designate a current staff member to take on the responsibilities of RSO anymore. RSOs must demonstrate specific training and experience in order to properly qualify and take on the resposibilities of a RSO.

The RSO is responsible for:

• Monitoring and surveys of all areas in which radioactive material is used
• Oversight of ordering, receipt, surveys, and delivery of byproduct material
• Packaging, labeling, surveys, etc., of all shipments of byproduct material leaving the institution
• Personnel monitoring program, including determining the need for and evaluating bioassays, monitoring personnel exposure records, and developing corrective actions for those exposures approaching maximum permissible limits
• Training of all personnel
• Waste disposal program
• Inventory and leak tests of sealed sources
• Decontamination
• Investigating any incidents and responding to any emergencies
• Maintaining all required records.

Because of the wide range of RSO responsibilities and the consequence for failing to maintain proper compliance, you cannot afford to allow unqualified or inexperienced individuals to fill these responsibilites.
